Who We Are

About Joan McArthur

In a long and storied journey through the ad business, as copywriter, Creative Director, faculty at Ontario College of Art and Design as well as Ad Clubs in L.A., Boston and The New School in NY; and as founding partner of 27 Marbles Training ‐ bringing strategic skill sets to advertising and marketing staffers from an insider’s POV, you can truly say Joan has been there/done that.

Awards, she’s won a few (hundred). From One Show Pencils to The NY Art Director Club’s coveted silver cubes, to CA and Marketing Awards and, well, let’s just say the shelf makes noises at night.

When she was Executive Creative Director of Ogilvy & Mather in Los Angeles, Joan presented Microsoft’s first-ever consumer advertising campaign to Bill Gates, and though he is a man of few words, he said yes.

She came to Canada because the weather was just too good in LA, and besides there were ads to be written, radio commercials to produce, and a radio show called Chick Radio to host. And generations of advertising newcomers and veterans to mentor, coach and train.

While here in Toronto, Joan wrote an ad campaign featuring a stand‐up comic named Thom Sharpe that has turned into the longest running broadcast campaign in Canadian advertising history, for Goodyear Tires.

She has written numerous articles appearing in the trade press, and since 2008 has been a proud faculty member of Canada’s premier accredited advertising curriculum, The Institute for Communication Agencies ((ICA) Communications and Advertising Accredited Professional program (CAAP).

When Strategy Magazine looked for someone to moderate a series of Round Tables where marketing leaders meet to uncover trends, insights and forecasts, they turned to her. This joint initiative continues into its fifth year, with recent topics ranging from The Post-Digital Era to Strategies for Diversity

Joan has sat on boards ranging from the L.A. Creative Club, the Advertising & Design Club of Canada, and Famous People Players. She has been on the board of the New York Festivals for more than ten years.

In early 2010, she founded Joan McArthur Training & Consulting Inc. – where she brings both an insider’s knowledge to training, consulting and coaching agencies and marketing groups, but a robust and long history with highly touted ad campaigns, blue-chip companies and legendary advertising greats.

And since 2008 she has brought the legendary Ideation process developed by Alex Osbourne 50 years ago (he coined the phrase ‘brainstorming’ and was also the ‘O’ in BBDO) and tailored it to the specific and timely needs of advertising and marketing companies, where big ideas and ground‐breaking innovations have never been so critical.

Joan is also a long-standing member of the International Titanic Society. But that’s a story for another day.
